When researching into the history of oriental medicinal practices, I decided to investigate acupuncture and tai chi. There are many more practices and exercises that are common in Asia but I think these two are the most well known in western culture.
Acupuncture stimulates specific points in the body with thin needles to release natural pain killers. Although the effectiveness of acupuncture may seem questionable to some, research shows that it can help with chronic pain in various places like the lower back, knees, and neck. It can also help with migraines as well. The risks of acupuncture are low so long as the person performing the acupuncture uses sterile needles and knows how properly insert the needles in the skin.
Tai Chi is a common exercise done by usually the elderly. Every time I go to China, I can always find a big group of grandparents doing tai chi early in the morning at the apartment complex's park. Tai Chi is great for improving balance and stability for older people, Parkinson's disease, and fibromyalgia. Many also say that it reduces anxiety and increases the quality of life. It promotes mental focus, breathing, and relaxation. All in all, it is a great way to start the day.
My notes on acupuncture and tai chi are under the "Notes" tab of this website if you would like to delve further into these topics.
